CHS girls skiers head to state

Appeal Staff Report

The Carson Senators girls skiing team literally had no competition against Rite of Passage - which didn't field any skiers - in a 90-0 win, but its 82-72 victory over the Wooster Colts Monday at Mt. Rose Ski Resort not only capped off a 5-1 regular season, but sent it into the postseason as well.

The Senators were one of six teams to advance to the NIAA Class 4A state championships, beginning Feb. 23-24 at Mt. Rose. Carson and Reno will represent the Sierra League.

"I'm excited - with this being my first year [as Carson head coach] - that we did as well as we did," said Senators coach Adrienne Garbiel. "I'm excited for our women."

Carson's Kacey Potter led all competitors in the slalom event with a time of 28.22 seconds. The Senators also took fourth through seventh in the event thanks to Nicole Carlevato (33.58), Tina Midboe (35.74), Katie Carter (36.75) and Krissie Gunn (37.9).

Katie Carlevato finished 10th (39.93), followed by Taylor Stokes (13th, 41.26), Rebecca Robertson (14th, 44.21) and Emma Kortemeier (15th, 44.39).

Although the Carson boys took a 90-49 victory over ROP, they failed to qualify as a team after losing to Wooster, 84-70.

"The guys tried so hard," Garbiel said. "We'll be even better for next year - a lot of our strongest skiers didn't graduate this year. Most of our depth doesn't come from our seniors. We were so close this year."

Garbiel said at least two Senators qualified as individuals for next week's state championships - Spencer Brinson and Clayton Hollett.

Spencer finished second behind Wooster's Matt Trabert with a time of 24.19. Trabert clocked in with a 23.34.

Hollett took seventh with a time of 27.84.

Garbiel said she'd learn later this week if any other Senators would qualify as individuals.
