Free throw contest set for Saturday

A free-throw competition sponsored by the Dayton Knights of Columbus will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Dayton Intermediate School. Call 772-3138.

Bake sale and backpack drive Saturday

A bake sale and backpack drive will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Greater Nevada Credit Union on Highway 50 in Dayton.

On hand will be pastries made by Dayton High School's Culinary Department.

The funds will go to the new Dayton Community Resource Bank, a tool to assist those in need. The bank will begin providing services and resources to children, and later will also assist adults. Call 246-2725 or 246-7550.

Safety cat to visit Dayton

Tommy the Safety Cat will be at the Dayton Branch Library, 321 Old Dayton Valley Road, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Thursday.

Tommy the Safety Cat is a real cat that resides in Winnemucca. He teaches young children how to respond to emergency situations from getting separated from a parent, to when and how to call 911. Call 775-835-3047 or e-mail cgrocholski@lyon-county.org.

Country club to hold wedding, prom expo

The Dayton Valley Golf and Country Club at Legado will hold a wedding and prom expo from 2-5 p.m. March 9.

It will include presentations by local vendors teaching about champagne, hors d'oeuvres, makeup and hair demonstrations, fashion show, registry tips, and raffle prizes.

Two photo exhibits at Fallon Art Center

Churchill Arts Council will present two exhibitions of photos beginning this weekend at the Oats Park Art Center, 151 E. Park St., in Fallon.

"Nevada Sky/Nevada Walls," is a series of images by Reno photographer Nolan Preece, which will be on view in the E.L. Wiegand Gallery. "Almost Gone/Photodynamics," is comprised of two series of images by the San Francisco-based photographer Marie José Durquet, which will on view in the Classroom Gallery.

The exhibitions will be on view through April 26. Call 423-1440.

Chamber to meet on master plan Tuesday

The Silver Springs Chamber of Commerce will hold a meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday to discuss the Lyon County master plan.

Wood Rogers Planner Melissa Lindell will present a proposed master plan using community concept planning idea. According to Chamber members, Lindell has been working with Lyon County Planning Department and three developers who are planning projects in Silver Springs and Stagecoach.

Tax assistance for seniors available

The American Association of Retired Persons will be offering tax services at the Silver Springs Senior Center each Tuesday and Wednesday.

All low- and middle-income seniors and families are welcome to attend.

Murder mystery back at Piper's

A murder mystery dinner show, "Dead End at Piper's" is back at the opera house for another run after a successful string of shows last summer.

Audience members are invited to interact with the Piper's Players, which are producing the show, at various points. They should bring deductive skills and a big appetite, because dinner is included, even dessert.

The bar opens at 6:30 p.m., with a buffet dinner and the stage play to follow at 7 p.m. today and Saturday. Dinner and the play are $25; to see the play only is $10. Call 847-0433 for dinner reservations by 5 p.m. the day prior to the show.

Edith Palmer's to offer dinner

On Sunday in Virginia City, at Edith Palmer's Country Inn, dinner will be served.

Heather Beaupre, chef-owner of Secret Service Catering, who also trained with the real Edith in her kitchen in the 1960s, will present an Italian-style dinner.

Cocktail hour, with a no-host bar, will begin at 4:30 and dinner served at 5:30. The cost is $24 and reservations are required.

Storey Democrats to hold convention

The Storey County Democratic Party Convention will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Virginia City High School.

Early registration will be available in Virginia City today from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. at 112 South "K" Street, or from 8 a.m.-10 a.m. at the high school.

Washoe to hold beach party

The Washoe Club's Sixth annual Beach Party will be March 1, with a beach barbecue of roast pig, oysters, shrimp and more.

Sand is brought in to fill the floor of the saloon at 112 South C St., Virginia City, and heaters are available if the weather is cold. The event will feature contests, including a Hula Hoop-off, Ugly Hawaiian Shirt Clash, a Bikini Extravaganza and Sexy Men's Leg Contest.

Music is by Road Daddy.

Reopening celebrated by grand ball

A March Grand Ball will be held from 7:30-11 p.m. March 8 to celebrate the anniversary of the reopening and dedication of Piper's Opera House on March 6, 1885.

With Gus the Victorian Dance Master at the helm of the Victorian Orchestra, Piper's Opera House will celebrate the re-opening and dedication that took place 113 years ago.

Dress is Victorian or dressy, will include dancing and elegant hors d'oeuvres. The Nevada Civil War Volunteers will be in attendance. Cost is $25. Call 847-0433 or 866-422-1956 toll free.
