Carson City Democrats will hold their county convention this weekend, the next step in the process of sorting out the party platform and candidates they will support at the state and national conventions.

Registration opens at 8 a.m. and the convention begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Eagle Valley Middle School, 4151 E. Fifth St.

Assemblywoman Bonnie Parnell of Carson City will be the keynote speaker.

The process began with the Jan. 19 caucuses, at which 178 delegates and alternates to the county convention were named, said party Chairman Steve Platt.

"This is the second step," he said.

Those delegates and alternatives can register for the convention today at party headquarters at 111 W. Telegraph, Suite 104.

Copies of the party platform are also available at the headquarters.

Delegates are asked to bring the pink copy of their Delegate Election Certificate and a government issued photo ID to properly identify themselves during registration. Platt said it's important for delegates to be registered and seated by 10 a.m. because, after that point, the party will begin seating alternates.

He also said it's important for delegates selected for a presidential candidate who is no longer running to attend the convention because they may be able to form a group with others and support someone else.

Platt said ever effort is being made to accommodate everyone.

"I just want to make it fair," he said. "I'm supporting Obama and I have other people supporting Hillary."

He said all Democrats are welcome to attend and there is no charge to get in.

County delegates will select their representatives to the state convention this summer as well as make platform recommendations to the state party.

Platt said the convention should take about three hours once it gets going.
