Carson High School's Spencer Brinson found himself outnumbered in Saturday's NIAA state skiing championships at Mt. Rose Ski Resort, but it didn't keep the junior from putting on a good show.
Brinson, who was the only individual Carson skier to compete at state, finished eighth in the slalom event.
"It was an awesome perfomance, a solid run for sure," said first-year CHS coach Adrienne Garbiel. "The guys who got him were from Incline and South Tahoe - there was a lot of talent there that he went up against.
"I'm proud of him. A lot of these guys come from a racing background. He's just a naturally talented athlete."
Eight Carson girls placed from 21st to 55th in the 65-skier field.
Nicole Carlevato finished a team-high 21st, followed by Kasey Potter (30th), Tina Midboe (36th), Krissie Gunn (45th), Katie Carlevato (46th), Danielle Beason (47th), Rebecca Robertson (53rd) and Katie Carter, who came in 55th.
"Nicole had a great run," Garbiel said. "There's a lot of talent in the upper 20 people. The skiers from the Lake are pretty good, for sure."
Garbiel said she was also pleased with her team as a whole.
"I'm happy with how they competed with the level of talent that was there," Garbiel said. "They all finished their runs and were aggressive."
Crystal Rutledge led the Douglas girls with a fifth-place finish and teammate Hillary Sapp placed ninth. tied with Galena's Allison Smith.
Team results were unavailable. Today's scheduled giant slalom was postponed and will be held this Saturday at Mt. Rose.
