Answers to the history quiz about Carson City:

1. C " Kit Carson. The city was named after the famous frontiersman, but Carson is known to have passed through the valley only once, in 1853 on a sheep and goat drive from New Mexico Territory to Sacramento. According to Guy Rocha, it's likely that Kit Carson came to know of Carson City prior to his death at Fort Lyon in Colorado Territory on May 23, 1868, but he never visited the community.

2. D " 714, according to the 1860 U.S. Census.

3. B " Carson City. Dayton and Genoa still squabble over which was the first settlement in what was to become Nevada, but Carson City was the first municipality with a government in place. Carson City had a mayor and city supervisors following its incorporation as a city.

4. B " Montpelier, Vt. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, Carson City is the 13th smallest capital city in the U.S.

5. A. Elliott Gould and Barbara Streisand. According to Guy Rocha, on Friday, Sept. 13, 1963, Pete Supera, Carson City Justice of the Peace, presided over the secret wedding of Gould, 25, and the 21-year-old Barbara Joan Streisand in his office.

"There was no press, no spectacle," wrote biographer Randall Riese in Her Name is Barbara (1993). "Not even an announcement. After all, as far as almost everyone knew, Barbara and Elliott Gould had been married for at least six months."

They divorced in 1971.
