Cave Rock climbing closure permanent

(Nevada Appeal News Service) - A climbing restriction on Cave Rock was made permanent on Tuesday.

The Cave Rock Management Plan will manage the site - considered sacred by the Washoe Tribe - for its historical and archeological significance.

Under this new forest order, Cave Rock remains open to the public for non-invasive recreational activities such as hiking, picnicking and fishing.

The new forest order follows a U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals opinion filed in August, 2007 that upheld the climbing closure for resource protection.

The judge's ruling leaves intact the Forest Service's decision to protect the Cave Rock heritage, archaeological and historic resources and prohibit activities that physically damage Cave Rock, such as rock climbing, graffiti and motorized use outside the highway corridor.

Cave Rock is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places for its archeological and historic significance.

Man gets 40 years for sexually exploiting child

RENO (AP) - A California man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for attempted sexual assault and willfully endangering his child through sexual abuse or exploitation.

Authorities said David Shelton, 41, was staying with his mother and his 15-year-old daughter a Reno motel on Oct. 13 when he reportedly gave her drugs and alcohol and attempted to rape her.

The girl ran out of the room naked and intoxicated.

During their investigation, police said they discovered Shelton also prostituted his daughter to a maintenance man at Sparks motel where they stayed previously.

The maintenance man, Russell Stroude, pleaded guilty to felony statutory sexual seduction and cooperated with police. He was sentenced to five years probation and an underlying 32-month prison term.
