New drivers younger than age 18 are required to take a 30-hour New Driver Education course if one is offered within a 30-mile radius of their residential address.

Western Nevada College is offering a Driver Education course at Silver Stage High School in Silver Springs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, March 1-April 15 (no class March 22 or 29 during spring break). The classes are open to anyone age 15 and older. The cost is $105.

Young drivers will learn safe driving techniques through lectures, class discussion, guest speakers and films that cover Nevada driving regulations, basic vehicle control, and driving maneuvers in various situations and environments.

In addition, the course covers how to handle distractions in the vehicle, avoid falling asleep at the wheel, peer pressure and driving under the influence. Guest speakers include public safety officials and insurance representatives. Instruction includes tips on how to drive safely around large trucks and motorcycles and how to avoid unexpected objects in the road, as well as maneuvering safely through roundabouts and rules for driving in bad weather.

To register for the non-credit class, students must fill out the WNC Community Education Admission Application at www.wnc.edu/academics/continuing_education/drivereducation/ and then mail, fax or bring it in to WNC Carson City, 2201 West College Parkway.

Once this application is processed, normally two days after it is received, students may call 775-445-4458 or proceed with Web-REG to register for the upcoming course.
