Extra deputies and state troopers will be on the roads through Jan. 20 in an effort to enforce seatbelt use.

Trooper Chuck Allen said this is the second of four waves of enforcement as law enforcement "join forces" in cracking down on seatbelt violations.

Nevada and Colorado were the two states selected by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to participate in this awareness campaign, said Allen.

The Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety received grant money that will provide for 18, eight-hour overtime shifts for troopers to work the next two weeks.

"Although the seatbelt law in Nevada is a secondary law, troopers will be concentrating their efforts on hazardous moving violations along with other moving, nonmoving and mechanical violations," said Allen in a news release.

Those drivers and passengers who are not in seat belts will be cited for not being properly restrained and may receive a ticket for the primary violation, he said.

"With the increased number of public service announcements and advertisements for this campaign, we hope that all drivers and motorists take the extra second or two to buckle up, not only for this campaign, but every time they ride in a motor vehicle" said Allen, public information officer for the Nevada Department of Public Safety.

The third wave of enforcement is scheduled for May 1-15, with the final wave planned for Aug. 25-Sept. 8.
