Grizzlies clamp down on Indians

Appeal Staff Report

The Elko Indians were able to hang with the Galena Grizzlies for one half, but Galena made some second-half adjustments to take a 68-53 victory Friday at Galena High School.

"In the third quarter, we locked up our defense and it led to some easy buckets," said Grizzlies assistant coach Matt Kromberg. "We were finding our rhythm defensively in the third quarter. Once we picked up the pressure, it caused some turnovers and we found some guys for some easy looks."

Six-foot-eight power forward Luke Babbitt led the Grizzlies with 26 points. He got some help from Markus "Goose" Robinson, who added 13 and Jake Mansfield, who drained three 3-pointers in contributing 11 points.

Stephen Klekas led the Indians with 31 points.

"We're disappointed how many easy looks they got tonight," Kromberg said. "Klekas hit five threes. We have to do a better job of getting our hands in people's faces."

With the win, Galena improved to 7-0 in High Desert League play and 13-11 overall. Babbitt now has 2,726 career points and is Nevada's all-time leading scorer. Galena hosts Spanish Springs Tuesday at 7 p.m.
