The 30-year-old girlfriend of Zephyr Cove resident Max Baer Jr., an entrepreneur and actor best known for his role as Jethro in the 1960s sitcom "The Beverly Hillbillies," died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot over the weekend.

At about 1:15 p.m. Thursday, Douglas County sheriff's deputies and Tahoe-Douglas paramedics responded to a report of an attempted suicide at Baer's Zephyr Heights residence, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

Baer, 70, led deputies to a bedroom of the home, where they found the woman suffering from a single gunshot wound to the chest from a semi-automatic handgun. The woman was still conscious when officers arrived and "told the deputies that the incident was an attempted suicide on her part," according to the statement.

A CALSTAR helicopter flew the woman to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, where she underwent trauma care and subsequently was put on life support.

The woman's family took her off life support Sunday, according to Douglas County sheriff's Sgt. Jim Halsey.

The gun was recovered from the scene, and the case is being investigated as a suicide.

"No foul play is suspected at this time," the news release stated.

The name of the woman was not available Monday.
