Fresh berries from the farmers market make delicious, nutritious eating

BRAD HORN/Nevada Appeal Berries like this assortment are sold at the 3rd and Curry Street farmer's market in Carson City. For the mixed berry bowl, take a variety of berries that you like - strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries are seen here - and layer the washed berries sprinkled with a little sugar (or not). Let them set out because fruit is better served at room temperature and it will give the berries a chance to get juicy. You can eat them plain or over a piece of pound cake (Lattin Farms is selling several varieties at the market) or angel food cake with a dollop of whipped cream on top and you have yourself a red, white and blue star-spangled dessert that can dress up your dessert table all summer long.

All I can say is if you missed the Saturday morning 3rd & Curry Street Farmers Market and all the other great activities up and down Curry Street then you missed a good time.

The good news is the market, the kids activities, and green thumb alley will be ongoing throughout the summer and beyond. If you like fruit, vegetables, good eats, and all sorts of fun activities for the little ones walk on down and enjoy your hometown. If you haven't been downtown lately you're in for a big surprise!

It's happening and it was the place to be. It was like a celebration of life when someone dies and you see everyone you haven't seen in ages, only no one kicked the bucket. It was truly a celebration of community. It's a morning market so it's cooler and we have some pretty nice shade trees with handicapped and bike parking. The quote from the Sunday Appeal said the small market had a festive atmosphere.

It was a gathering of Carsonites, young and old and in-between. The market also has tables where you can drink coffee, read the paper or your favorite book and grab a bite to eat. Let's all do our part to make this market a success and keep it viable. Plan on coming down and spending $10 and that will be money well spent on a healthier you. Once you get use to eating the farm fresh produce you'll be hooked. High gas prices got you down? Walk or bike on down and sign up for our weekly drawing of a basket filled with all sorts of goodies from the vendors or sign up for a free $25 gas card give away each and every week. You can even register to vote at the market. Let's celebrate our families, our community and our country. (Please, there are not dogs allowed in the market area per health department regulations.)

For the mixed berry bowl you see in the picture; take a variety of berries that you like, I used strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries and layer the washed berries sprinkled with a little sugar (or not). Let them set out because fruit is better served at room temperature and it will give the berries a chance to get juicy. You can eat them plain or over a piece of pound cake (Lattin Farms is selling several varieties at the market) or angel food cake with a dollop of whipped cream on top and you have yourself a red, white and blue star spangled dessert that can dress up your dessert table all summer long.
