Rutledge strong in Cardinals' victory

Matt Rutledge struck out nine of six innings to pick up the win in the Carson Cardinals 6-2 victory over the Northwest Royals on Tuesday at Ron McNutt Field.

Rutledge was touched for two runs on two hits in the first inning, but settled down and didn't allow another hit until the sixth. Rutledge allowed back-to-back singles and then threw a wild pitch to give the Royals runners at second and third with one out.

But Rutledge, who ended up allowing four hits, escaped the jam on a lineout and a groundout. David Charles pitched a scoreless seventh, striking out two.

The Cardinals took a 3-2 lead in the second after Cody Barr doubled, Rutledge walked and Brooks Hutchins singled to load the bases. Tyler Hutchins walked to force in a run, Tyler Smith followed with an RBI single and another run scored on a fielder's choice to make it 3-2.

Carson took a 4-2 lead in the third on the strength of Tommy Preston's walk and Paul Cagle's single. In the fifth, Preston, Colby Blueberg and Barr all walked and the Cardinals went on to score on a wild pitch and an error to take a 6-2 lead. Collin Grischott and Brett Valley each added a hit for Carson.
