Phone scam reported in Carson

The Carson City Sheriff's Department is warning residents of a phone scam in which a caller claims to be raising money for the department's DARE program.

Lt. Bob White said he's received reports that a woman is calling homes and businesses stating money is needed to create a "Stranger Danger" book through the Sheriff's Department's drug and alcohol awareness program.

"There is no such program and we are unaware of any 'Stranger Danger' book," said White.

White said people should be leery of callers asking for donations.

"Before giving any money, ask for a name and phone number from the person seeking the donations," he said.
