Arnold, Sosa qualify for JO nationals

Two Carson High graduates, Mike Arnold and Gloria Sosa, have qualified for the USA Track and Field Junior Olympic National Championships to be held July 22-27 in Omaha, Neb.

Mike Arnold qualified in the young men's pole vault in the 17-18-year-old division and Sosa qualified in the 1,500 and 3,000 meters in the young women's 17-18 class. Arnold and Sosa qualified with their finishes this past weekend at the Regional Junior Olympics held in Livermore, Calif. The top three at regionals qualified for nationals.

Arnold won the pole vault at the regionals with a mark of 15 feet, five inches. Arnold has a personal best of 16-1.

Sosa won the 1,500 in a personal best four minutes, 56.20 seconds and the 3,000 in a personal best 10:50.73.

Carson City's Blanca Sosa also competed at regionals, finishing eighth in the bantam (9-10) division in the 1,500 in 6:19. The three athletes competed for the Reno Tahoe Athletics Club.

To qualify for the regionals, athletes had to finish in the top eight at the Pacific Association Junior Olympics held last month in Livermore. Gloria Sosa's reegional qualifying times were 5:15 in the 1,500 and 11:54 in the 3,000 and she went on to shatter both of those times at this past weekend's meet.

Butler has solid round in public links event

Carson City's Rod Butler shot a solid first round score 3-over-par 74 in the first round of the United States Amateur Public Links Golf Championship on Monday at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora, Colo.

Butler, who recently stepped down at Carson High's boys golf coach, is in a 28-way tie for 54th place after the first round. The top 64 players after today's second round will advance to single elimination match play beginning on Wedensday.

So as of now Butler is among 28 players going for the final 11 spots into match play. Before the event Butler said he figured shooting at least 4-over each day could be good enough to advance him to match play. Aaron Goldberg was the first round leader after shooting a 6-under 65.

Carson High sets fall sports meeting

Carson High will hold a Fall Sports Clearance meeting on Wednesday, July 30 at CHS. Incoming freshmen, new CHS students and new athletes who have not completed a sport at CHS will meet at 4:30 p.m. Returning athletes who have completed a sport at CHS will meet from 6-7 p.m.

Sports packets are available at www.carsonhigh.com and by clicking on the ACTIVITIES button. All forms must be completed before an athlete can practice. All athletes must complete 10 days of practice before competing.

Athletic physicals, which are required every two years, will be available for $10 at the July 30 meeting. Also available will be the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association drug/alcohol policy and student activity cards, which are mandatory for all athletes, for $25.

School insurance if necessary will also be available for purchase. All athletes must be insured.

All forms must be completed before student is cleared for sports activity. All athletes must complete 10 days of practice before competing.

Any outstanding fees that athletes have can also be paid at the July 30 meeting. Athletes with any unpaid outstanding fees will not be eligible.

To expedite the process it's recommended that athletes complete all the required forms before the July 30 meeting.
