Dear Voter: It matters who will sit as Carson City and Storey County's next District Judge. Mark Krueger has devoted his career to serving the citizens of Northern Nevada. As a Chief Deputy District Attorney, Mark has the experience to be a fair and impartial leader. Mark is working with the Carson City District Attorney's Office and community leaders to address gang problems and make our counties safer. ...

Have you ever been arrested? If so, when and for what offense?

... The only candidate with recent prosecutorial experience, Mark prosecuted 8 jury trials over the last 2 years, including murder, sexual assault and drug cases, as well as numerous misdemeanor trials. Recent experience is important for many reasons, the most important of which is the use of technology and technological forensic evidence in the courtroom. An example of a developing field of technological forensic evidence is cell phone evidence. Text messages and cell phone video of incidents like fights at a public park are important pieces of evidence in today's criminal trials. ...

Should judges be given more discretion than allowed by current law in imposing sentences? Why?

... In addition to his prosecutorial experience, Mark has the civil experience needed for a District Judge. As a prior Senior Deputy Attorney General with the Nevada Attorney General's Office, Mark practiced in the areas of complex banking, finance, contracts, consumer protection, unclaimed property, general civil litigation and administrative law. As a Chief Deputy District Attorney, Mark has practiced in the areas of zoning, planning, contracts, ordinances, Open Meeting Law and other county civil legal matters. ...

What criteria would you use for deciding whether to impose or affirm sentences outside of standard ranges?

... Mark has demonstrated excellent leadership. As a Senior Deputy Attorney General, Mark supervised several other deputies at the Nevada Attorney General's Office. As a Chief Deputy District Attorney, Mark currently supervises an office of twenty staff and deputies. He has experience with county budgets and is fiscally responsible. ...

What response should society have to prison overcrowding?

... Mark is community involved. He sits on the Board of Directors of the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada and volunteers for those who cannot afford legal assistance. In addition, Mark recently served as a juror for a Carson City trial. ... Mark, his wife Shanna, a teacher, and their twins, Sabrina and Sebastian, live in Carson City. He earned his Bachelor's Degree at the University of Wisconsin and his law degree at California Western School of Law. Mark came to Carson City to serve as an extern to Honorable Justice A. William Maupin of the Nevada Supreme Court. He subsequently served as a law clerk to now retired Honorable Judge Michael E. Fondi, and to retiring Honorable Judge William A. Maddox at the First Judicial District Court in Carson City and Storey County. ...
