Las Vegas police officer shot in leg during call at club

LAS VEGAS " A Las Vegas police officer has been shot and wounded after responding to a call at a strip club several miles west of the Las Vegas Strip.

Police Officer Bill Cassell says the officer is hospitalized in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Authorities say they believe the suspect is in an overturned sport utility vehicle a few miles east of the Penthouse Club on West Russell Road.

The vehicle is surrounded and SWAT team negotiators are on the scene.

Traffic has been shut down in the residential neighborhood near Hacienda Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard.

A staging area has been set up at the Durango High School football field.

Police say the incident began with a 6:55 a.m. call with a report that security was trying to eject a person from the Penthouse Club.

That's several miles east of the scene of the shooting, which was reported a few minutes later with a traffic crash near Hacienda and Rainbow.
