Janis "Jan" Smerdon, 62, passed away June 4, 2008, at her home in Carson City.

Jan was born June 11, 1945 in Los Angeles, Calif. to Frank and Jeannette Phillips. She moved with her family to Virginia City in 1959, graduating from Storey County High School in Virginia City in 1963.

Jan worked as an office supervisor at Carson City Fire Department, Station No. 1 on Stewart Street for over twenty years. She was an active member in the Kiwanis Club. Jan was a Catholic and served as a Eucharist Minister at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. She enjoyed sewing and loved to travel. Jan traveled with her church family to Rome, Italy and Greece.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Jan will be dearly missed by her loving daughter, Debbie Abercrombie and her husband, Eric; sister, Pat Stewart and her husband, Leon all of Carson City; two grandchildren, Charlie and Megan Abercrombie, and lots of loving family members.

A vigil service will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Carson City.

On Jan's 63rd birthday, a Memorial Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 11 with honors provided by the Carson City Fire Department Honor Guard at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church in Carson City.

A private inurnment will take place at Lone Mountain Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jan's memory to the Corpus Christi Catholic Church Building Fund.

Walton's Chapel of the Valley has been entrusted with her final arrangements.
