Emblem Club donates to sheriff's DARE program

An auxiliary club of the Elks Lodge donated proceeds from a second-hand clothing sale to the Carson City Sheriff's Department's DARE program.

DARE organizer Lisa Davis said the Carson City Emblem Club No. 507 presented a check for $784 to the Carson City Sheriff's Department this week.

The Emblem Club is a national charitable organization, with its local chapter donating to the Camp Sertoma for Deaf & Hearing Impaired children, Western

Nevada Community College Nursing Scholarship, Carson City Sheriff's Department, Advocates to end Domestic Violence, Bordewich-Bray School Hearing Center and the Elks Lodge's Safe Haven " relocation homes for battered and abused children.

Sheriff Ken Furlong said the donation for the DARE program will go toward purchasing materials not allowed by grant money such as bracelets, pens, and other items with the word DARE on them.

"It is important to add an element of fun to prevention " it keeps the kids enthused and involved," said Emblem Club President Ellen Peters.
