Bowman, Puzey, Gill recognized

Three local athletes were named to the 2008 Western Athletic Conference all-Academic Team for spring sports.

Dayton's Matt Bowman in baseball, Douglas High graduate Brittany Puzey in softball and Galena's Lux Gill in women's golf were all honored. All three just completed their junior seasons.

To be eligible for the all-WAC academic team, athletes must have at least a 3.0 grade point average and have competed in at least 50 percent of their team's contests.

To be eligible, a student-athlete have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests. Student-athletes for the spring sports team must have completed at least one year at their institution, while the freshmen/transfers team honors student-athletes in their first year at the school.

SBSC Regalo to hold tryouts

SBSC Regalo, the Great Basin Youth Soccer League Girls under-13 2008 Spring League Champions, is seeking skilled players born after Aug. 1, 1994 and for those entering eighth grade this fall before July 31, 1995 for its under-14 team.

Tryouts are slated for Friday, July 11 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday, July 15 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Virginia Foothills Park (next to Brown Elementary School) in South Reno.

Coach Mike Simon, a former professional player at national and international levels with more than 35 years of experience, is recognized for his Mike Simon Soccer Camps and coaches for Sierra Nevada College.

The Regalo under-14 team is a member of the Sagebrush Soccer Club and plays in the GBYSL with players from Reno, the Carson area, Incline Village, and Truckee.

Cardinals golf tournament set

The Carson Cardinals baseball team will hold a fund-raising golf tournament on Sunday, July 13 at the Eagle Valley East Course.

Shotgun start is at 8 a.m. for the four-person scramble. Cost is $65 per person or $220 for a foursome. The fee includes 18 holes of golf, cart, range balls and a barbecue.

Hole sponsorships for $100 are available. There will also be a silent auction and a drawing prizes, which will include a Kelley Athletic Store baseball chair. There will be prizes for the first through third place teams as well.

Mulligans for $5, limit two per player, and $5 per foot of putting tape, limit 10 feet per player.

Sertoma golf tournament scheduled

The Carson Sertoma Club's annual golf tournament will be held on Sunday, June 22 at the Eagle Valley East Course.

Shotgun start is at 8:30 a.m. the event is held to raise funds for local children with hearing/speech problems, cancer and diabetes.

There will be closest to the hole, long drive and beat the pro contests, a drawing and team prizes. The $85 entry fee covers golf, cart, barbecue and tee prizes.

Dufurrena, Phillips fire aces

Winnemucca's Linda Dufurrena shot her first hole-in-one on Monday at Eagle Valley's East Course. She used a 7-wood from the red tee on the eighth hole to fire her ace. Rene Vesco, Carole Dougherty and Laura Gibson witnessed the shot.

David Phillips recently shot his first hole in one at Eagle Valley's East Course as well. He also fired his ace on the eighth hole from the white tee, using a 5-iron. Jeremy Grundy witnessed the shot.
