Lewis, Cooke coaching at Kearney

A pair of Douglas High graduates has been cutting their coaching chops at the University of Nebraska, Kearney.

Chad Cooke and Cal Lewis both served as assistant coaches for Kearney this past season. It was Cooke's second season with the team while Lewis was in his first year.

Kearney won its second-straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title in Grand Junction, Col., earlier this month.

The Lopers went 4-0 in the tournament and outscored their opponents 54-23. The team had a .422 batting average during the season and averaged 13.5 runs per game.

Cooke recently received his master's degree from the school while Lewis is currently working on his.

Both athletes played for Feather River College. After graduation, Cooke played at Dana College in Blair, Neb., and Lewis went on to play for South Dakota State.

The head coach at Kearney is Damon Day, who coached Cooke at Dana.

Carson Sertoma golf event is June 22

The Carson Sertoma Club's annual charity golf tournament will be held on Sunday, June 22 at the Eagle Valley East Course.

Shotgun start is at 8:30 a.m. The event is held to raise funds for local children with hearing/speech problems, cancer and diabetes.

There will be closest to the hole, long drive and beat the pro contests, a drawing and team prizes. The $85 entry fee covers golf, cart, barbecue and tee prizes.
