Hanako Kono "Mary Ann" Coonley

Former long-time resident of Carson City Hanako Kondo 'MaryAnn' Coonley passed away on Saturday, June 14, 2008, at her residence in Tempe, Ariz.

Ms.Coonley was born January 19, 1928, in Tokyo, Japan, into an illustrious family as the daughter of Izai and Kazumi Kondo, and a granddaughter of one of the last samurai in Japan. After World War II, she moved to the United States as the war bride of Franklin Coonley, a career Army soldier. She accompanied him throughout his assignments, including stints in West Germany, with their final station in Carson City.

Ms. Coonley was actively involved with several Masonic-affiliated groups, including support of the youth groups. She was very proud of her former role as Worthy Matron of Esther Chapter 3 of the Order of Eastern Star. In her spare time, Ms. Coonley loved to cook (which she did so well), exercise her amazing green thumb, follow the collegiate and pro-football games, and being the life of the party. She also enjoyed the Senior Citizen center and Tai Chi.

Ms. Coonley is preceded in death by her husband, Franklin.

She is survived by her adored children, Susan Smith-Ansotegui and Susan's husband, Mike Ansotegui, of Fallon, Nevada; Lillian Coonley-Connell and Lillian's husband, Dave Connell, of Phoenix, Arizona; her son, Grant Franklin Coonley of Los Angeles, California; and four grandchildren, Johana Smith, Ashley Smith O'Neill and husband Nicholas O'Neill, Franklin Connell and Grace Connell. Her family and friends will dearly miss her.

A memorial service for Ms. Coonley will be 9 a.m. Saturday, at the Lone Mountain Masonic Cemetery located at 1044 Beverly Drive in Carson City. A reception will immediately follow at her 1620 Molly Drive home in Carson City.
