Americans win, Nationals edged
Carson American got off to a rousing start in the 11-12-year-old Little League Hooligan All-Star Tournament with a 14-0 win over Reno American West on Wednesday at Gardnerville's Aspen Park.
The Americans led 1-0 when they scored 13 runs in the fifth inning. Luke Maher pitched 4 1/3 innings of shutout ball with nine strikeouts and two walks.
Jay Milligan got a strikeout and a groundout to close out the game.
Jace Zampirro hit a three-run home run, Zak Harges, Michael Patrick, Andy Cooper, Joe Runge and Ben Allbritten all had two hits and Zach Andrews, Maher and Zach Heinz each added a hit. The Americans will next play at 8 p.m. today against North Tahoe.
Meanwhile the Carson Nationals lost a heartbreaker on Thursday in the 11-12 Hooligan event, falling to Sparks Centennial 13-12. The Nationals trailed throughout until scoring three runs in the sixth inning to take a 12-10 lead. But Sparks scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth for the win.
Nevin Elliott was the tough luck loser. After pitching a scoreless fifth, Elliott was tagged with the loss.
In the sixth, Sparks had cut the lead to 12-11 and had the bases loaded with one out when Elliott induced a grounder to third baseman Ronnie Orzalli, who threw home for the second out. But then Sparks scored two runs on an error for the win.
Archie Redmond went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, Josiah Pongasi was 2-for-3 with two runs, T.J. Thomsen ws 2-for-3 with a run, Kyle Steele went 2-for-4 with two runs, Elliott was 2-for-4, Alex Borgman, Jacob Roll and Chase Blueberg all had a hit and a run, Evan Carlson was 2-for-3 and Orzalli went 1-for-3. The Nationals next play at 4 p.m. Saturday against Carson Valley.
WNC golf tournament slated
Early registration with discounts available for business teams is now being accepted through June 30 for the 11th annual Western Nevada College/Greater Nevada Credit Union Golf Classic. The WNC Foundation event is Friday, Sept. 19, at the Eagle Valley West Course. All proceeds will benefit special projects at the college.
WNC Vice President of Development and External Affairs Helaine Jesse said the tournament has become a tradition with many golfers who return each year.
"Having fun is almost guaranteed," she said. "The scramble format ensures even duffers will do well."
Entrants will have a chance to win tee prizes as well as gifts for longest drive and closest to the pin. The grand prize is free golf every month for a year for one foursome. There will also be one par-3 hole in which a hole-in-one will win a car.
Participants will enjoy a continental breakfast, on-course refreshments, and an awards barbecue emceed by KRNV-TV Sports Director Brian Samudio. This year's tournament will have a maximum of 36 teams, and will tee off in a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
Sponsorship opportunities include featuring the organization's name in the event program, banners at the event, event announcements and promotional materials. Donations are also being sought, including drawing items and door prizes.

USTAyouth tennis event in S. Tahoe
A United States Tennis Association Junior Novice Tennis Tournament will be held from June 27-29 at South Tahoe High.

Sierra Lutheran golf event scheduled
There's still time to register for Sierra Lutheran High School's fifth annual golf tournament to be held this Saturday at the Genoa Lakes Resort Course.
Shotgun start for the four-person scramble event will be at 8 a.m. Cost per person is $125.
Registration can be done by calling Sierra Lutheran, 782-0060, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. today. Registration will also be accepted on a first come, first serve basis beginning at 7 a.m. on Saturday. Proceeds will go to scholarships for Sierra Lutheran students.
Prowlers softball in need of players
