Carson City: A town with good tastes

The Taste of Downtown was a great success Saturday, with lots of people "tasting" their way down the main street, listening to music, meeting friends and having a fine time. We have our own "Taste of Carson City" from time to time, such as anything Charlie Abowd (Adele's) cooks; Giles Galhout's (ZBistro) soups, specials and orange wine; Don Rudin's (Mallard's) kindness and good food; John Hurzel's (Grandma Hattie's) strudel and 'senior menu;' Tito's margaritas and Friday's fish plates; Woody's waffles and fresh orange juice; Jerry Massad's (Cracker Box) tasty, tasty breakfasts and ditto; the Basil (with Nan, Bob and TJ) for "taste trips" to Thailand; Skip Thurman's Basque lamb chops; Mom & Pop's for big breakfasts; the Villa Basque Deli's potato patata; and D'Vine Wine for their lunch buffet. We KNOW we have skipped some of the great places in Carson and other areas, but we couldn't name them all ... or we haven't had time to eat at all of them (and believe us, we try). Just don't tell us, "There's no place to eat in Carson City." If you do, we suggest you move to the boonies and eat weeds. Remember, these are just SOME of the goodies we admire and adore ... we have others, and we know you do, too. Drop us a line and tell us what you like and we'll pass it on. Yummm.

Someone has complained about the jokes we pass along, saying that the people that give them to us didn't make them up. No kidding. So we will not offend your sensibilities about that anymore, we will make a point of telling you that "so and so" found this on the Internet, and, if you have to, YOU can Google the original jokester and let him, or her, get the credit. Good luck. By the way, the people who send us the jokes (THAT THEY GOT OFF THE INTERNET), don't pretend that they made them up ... they just pass them on, as we do. If you don't understand that, we are ever so very sorry.

Now, for "one of those jokes," from Nina Bailey, who sent this to us, and did not claim it as hers: "My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table. My wife asked, 'Do you know her?' 'Yes,' I sighed. 'She's my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear she hasn't been sober since.' 'My God,' says my wife. 'Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?'"

We all saw where Guy Rocha has been having severe problems with his eyes, so, we were glad to hear he is giving a lecture at the Gold Hill Hotel (847-0111) on July 8. We were, however, hoping he hadn't developed a lisp ... his lecture is on "Demythifying Nevada History." Oh ... go ahead and groan.

More good stuff: Run What Cha Brung, the car show, will be at Fuji Park this weekend (883-0927); Kirk Jesse and Ryan Schmid will be having birthdays; and Kress and Brian Whalen will celebrate their 48th wedding anniversary this week; also Sarah and Kurt, and Louise and Zach, who celebrate a 6th and a 10th. Congratulations to all. And wonderful best wishes to Lilly Schaupp and Jon Josten on their engagement.

For all of you who are on "bear watch" in the local area, two friends of Carolyn's on Maxwell Drive (off Goni Road) called the Sheriff's Office and Animal Control about a bear in their tree. They came and sedated the bear, then let the kids (and Paul) pet the bear, saying this is the ONLY time you will probably get a chance to pet one. DON'T DO THIS ON YOUR OWN. And watch out for bears around town. Grrrrr...

So, the Special Session will open Friday. As M's late friend, Ed Glick, used to say, "Keep your children and pets off the streets ... the Legislature is in town." Makes sense ... it's "scary times."

JoAnn Gardner SENT this to us (she DID NOT claim it as her own...yeah, we CAN belabor a point): "A steel company, feeling it was time for a shakeup, hired a new CEO, who was determined to rid the company of slackers. As he walked through the halls, he noticed a guy leaning against the wall, doing nothing. 'How much do you make?' asked the CEO. Surprised, the young man replied, 'About $400 a week.' With that, the CEO handed the guy a check for $1,600 and told him to 'Get out, and don't come back.' Feeling good about it, the CEO than asked the workers, 'What did that goofball do for us?' A voice answered, 'Pizza delivery guy from Domino's.'"

All our best to Norma Conway and June Joplin, who have been ill. We hope they're feeling better soon. And ditto that for Danielle.

Be sure and watch KOLO-TV Channel 8 on Wednesday at 8 p.m. this week ... you will see our own Wild Horse Children's Theater Company, along with Carol Scott and Pat Josten, on "Wife Swap." No, they're not the swapped wives, but they do have a part in the story. And Duane "Beans" Sousa performs occasionally at D'Vine Wine (call 882-7766 for times) ... he's great. The son of Jeanne and John Greene, Jamie Greene has received an appointment to Annapolis. What a great honor for a young man who deserves it. He was in the National Honor Society, captain of the football team and served four years in the NJROTC. Way to go, Jamie.

Empire Ranch Golf Course is holding its couple's every-other-Friday golf tournament this Friday (885-2100), with a shepherd's pot roast pie and special salad for dinner. The DETR/ESD retirees lunch will be on Friday at the Nugget buffet at 11:30 a.m. They promise some great conversation about the special session, along with "recommendations." HA. Then, the Carson Chapter RPEN will hold a picnic at Ross Gold Park on July 1 at 11 a.m. They will furnish burgers and wieners, if you bring a salad or dessert to share. Marty Bibb will be the speaker. Just don't speak with your mouth full, Marty.

To close, we have a cute joke from Cathy Robinson (who, undoubtedly got it off the you-know-where): "An elderly gentleman was invited to an old friend's home for dinner. He was impressed by his friend calling his wife, 'Honey, My Love, Darling, etc.' The couple had been married almost 70 years, and it was obvious they were still in love. When the wife went into the kitchen, the friend told his buddy how nice it was he still called her by those pet names. The old man shook his head, and said, 'I have to tell you the truth ... her name slipped my mind almost 10 years ago, and I'm scared to death to ask her what it is.'"
