Gov. Jim Gibbons on Monday signed the bills passed during Friday's special session, saying even though he doesn't completely agree with what lawmakers did, he is pleased lawmakers addressed the budget shortfall without trying to increase taxes.
He cited the $47.9 million they took from the fund providing textbooks, instructional materials and classroom equipment.
"I believe it would be more prudent to have targeted reductions to operating budgets of state agencies and protect these valuable resources," he said.
He also said he thinks lawmakers should have examined bonding the tobacco settlement money to pay the difference.
"In many ways the Legislature's compromise is very similar to the proposal I outlined and it is in this spirit of compromise that I am signing these bills to balance the state budget for the remainder of the current biennium," Gibbons said.
For the future, he said, he wants to create a stronger cap on state spending to avoid further shortfalls.
