CHS softball wins two at Lassen

A pair of complete games from Daria Leid and Nikkie Keller led to a pair of victories for the Lady Senators in the Lassen Tournament Friday in Susanville, Calif.

Leid faced 24 batters, allowing four hits, four runs (two earned), and two walks in an 11-4 victory over Enterprise (Calif.) to open the day. Leid added six strikeouts and got plenty of help from her teammates as Carson put up seven runs in the first two innings.

For her part, Keller faced 28 batters, striking out six, in the Senators' 7-3 victory over Red Bluff (Calif.).

Carson's third game - against Chico - was rained out in the third inning.

"The pitchers did a great job and the hitters were hitting the ball today," said Carson coach Scott Vickrey of his team's nuts-and-bolts approach. "[Leid and Keller] set the tone for today. When the bats start popping, we know we're having a good day. The pitchers have been keeping us in games."

With the wins, Carson improved to 7-2 on the season.

In game one, after Enterprise took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Keller had an RBI triple and Cassie Vondrak added an RBI single to give the Senators a 2-1 advantage.

After giving up a pair of runs in the top of the second inning, the Senators blew the game open in the bottom of the frame, scoring five runs. Christa Casci had an RBI single and Keller - who went 2-for-4 with 4 RBI - hit a bases-loaded triple to put Carson up 7-3.

Carson added a run in the third, another in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

Casci went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. She had help from Abby Rankl (1-for-1), Vondrak (2-for-2, including a triple), Hannah Shaw (1-for-1 with two walks) and K.C. Withrow (1-for-3).

After going up 2-0 in the first inning of game two, Carson briefly gave up the lead when Red Bluff put up three runs in the third. The Senators took the lead back with three runs in the sixth and added two more in the seventh.

Leid was 3-for-4 with a double, Belen Munoz was 2-for-3, Keller 1-for-4, Casci and Withrow each went 1-for-3 and Rankl was 2-for-4 to pace the Carson attack.

Vickrey said he would find out at 9:30 a.m. today what the schedule - and weather - held for his team.

CHS JV SPLIT

The Senators dropped a 14-1 decision to Spanish Springs in the first game of a twinbill before rebounding with a 9-0 win over the North Tahoe varsity team in game two in the Douglas Tournament in Minden.

Christina Gallegos went the distance against the Cougars and Marrissa Luicidi had a hit and scored the Senators' only run.

Natalie Morrow picked up the complete game shutout win over the Lakers in game two. She had four strikeouts in four innings of action.

After scoring one run in the first inning, the Senators exploded for seven in the second. They added one more in the third.

Luicido scored three runs, adding one hit and an RBI, Lauren Knorzer chipped in a run, a hit and an RBI and Elayna Shine scored one run and had one hit for Carson. which improved to 3-1 on the season. They will face an opponent to be determined beginning at 10 a.m. today.

DAYTON 8, LOWRY 3

The Dust Devils took a 3-1 lead in the first inning and never looked back as Sierra Barnwell pitched a complete game. Barnwell spread out six hits, three runs and three walks and struck out 12 in the win for Dayton.

The Dust Devils added one run in the second, two in the fourth and one each in the sixth and seventh innings.

Brittany Hill led Dayton, going 3-for-4, scoring two runs and knocking in two runs. Brittany Burrows was also 3-for-4, notching a double and adding an RBI. Nicole Iratcbal scored three runs and went 2-for-three. Melissa Goetz (1-for-3, 1 RBI), Barnwell (1-for-4, 1 RBI), and Natasha Wells (1-for-3) also contributed offensively for Dayton, which is now 1-0 in league and 1-1 overall.
