Rose Chapman, 86, a Carson City resident since 1977, and a resident of Carson Plaza, passed away on February 29, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital in Reno. Rose's niece Julie Rodriguez Jones and husband Curtis were at her side.
She was born on January 4, 1922 in Canyon, Calif. to Juana and Anastacio Rodriguez of Puerto Rico. Rose was a retired grocery clerk of 26 years having worked for the P-X Markets in Pleasant Hill, Calif. Rose was predeceased by her husband, Alvie Chapman, the holder of five bronze stars during WWII, brothers George Rodriguez of Richmond, Calif., Manual Rodriguez and sisters Adelina McKean of Santa Rosa and Angie Lewis.
Rose attended the one room Canyon School in Canyon, Calif. and Oakland Technical High School in Oakland, Calif. Her brother George also attended Canyon School beginning in 1919, the year after it opened. All the children learned to speak English at the one room schoolhouse long before bilingual education.
Rose was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. Her ashes will be scattered at Topaz Lake in May. Walton's Family Funeral in Reno handled the cremation
