BEAVER CREEK, Colo. " A memorial service for record-setting adventurer and business tycoon Steve Fossett is scheduled for today in Beaver Creek, Colo., where Fossett and his wife, Peggy, lived part time.

Fossett was last seen Sept. 3, when his single-engine plane took off from an airstrip near Yerington.

An extensive rescue effort was officially suspended after more than a month of searching across 20,000 square miles of the rugged western Nevada mountains.

Fossett was declared dead last month.

His adventures had included circling the world in a balloon, plane and sailboat, swimming the English Channel and competing in the Iditarod Sled Dog Race.

Fossett's service will take place at 1 p.m. at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek.

Fossett was 63.
