Pinwheels for awareness and a downtown experience

Advocates to End Domestic Violence again will be participating in the National Campaign "Pinwheels for Prevention." The mission statement is simple and right to the point, "this campaign is designed to raise awareness about the numbers of reports of suspected child abuse made each year in our community. It is hoped that this increased awareness will lead communities to develop prevention plans and improve resources to help children at risk and families in crisis."

You can join Advocates to End Domestic Violence, Division of Child and Family Services and the Ron Wood Family Resource Center in participating in bringing awareness to the community April 15 on the Legislative lawn.

Each pinwheel represents a report of abuse or neglect of a child, 800 pinwheels is a visual concept that local children are being hurt.

Consider the facts - reporting child abuse could save a child's life, the cycle of abuse can be stopped with intervention and counseling, and abusive families need help and can receive that assistance if you pick up that telephone and make that report. No community is immune to children being abused or neglected. If you would like to participate in the event or volunteer, please call the numbers below or come and show your support April 15.

Not many people know how the Emblem Club got started. It began in 1917 when a small group of Elk's ladies began to wrap bandages for World War I.

They enjoyed the sociability, and at the same time felt the joy of accomplishment. The combination of assisting others and enjoying good fellowship appealed to other women, and a community group came together.

Here in Carson we are lucky to have the Elk's as well as the Emblem Club, and the ladies will be hosting the annual upscale boutique of gently recycled business, career and formal wear plus beautiful accessories and jewelry.

This is a step above your regular rummage sale.

What: A high-fashion "Second Hand Lil" Boutique sale

Where: Elk's Lodge, 515 N. Nevada St.

When: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Lunch will be served for $5 a person, so stop in at noon to enjoy a great meal as well.

Enjoy some fun downtown in Carson with the Wine Walk. Walking the downtown with family and friends and checking out the great shops, sampling wine and enjoy snacks at each location. This is a fun time to appreciate how beautiful the town is and checking out the new establishments that have joined the walk and meet new acquaintances.
