A lovely young lady we know, Stella Baldauskas, daughter of Mary and Chuck Baldauskas, was severely injured in an ATV accident a couple of weeks ago and broke her back. She has incurred terrific medical expenses, so a group of kind ladies in Gardnerville are holding a benefit to help Stella. It will be at Sharkey's on Friday, April 25, from 6:30-11 p.m. They are hosting dinner and dancing for $25 a couple, $15 single, and $10 for under 10 years of age. You can buy tickets at the door, and bring extra money for the raffle. If you have something to donate for the raffle, or want to donate to Stella, please call her sister, Debbie, at 265-2315, and she can give you details. Stella is a graduate of DHS, and a terrific actress and Marilyn Monroe impersonator. The good news is that she is not paralyzed and will, hopefully, make a full recovery. Danged if we know who sent this to us, but it sure is cute: "A couple go out for a Chinese dinner and order the 'chicken surprise.' The waiter brings the meal in a covered iron pot. Just as the wife is about to serve herself, the lid rises slightly, and she see two beady little eyes. She slams down the lid, and asked her husband if he saw that. He's about to lift the lid to look, and again the lid rises and two little eyes peek out. Rather perturbed, he calls the waiter over, tells him what happened, and demands an explanation. 'Please, sir,' says the waiter, 'what you order?' 'Chicken surprise,' the man replies. 'Ah, so sorry. I make mistake. I bring you Peking duck.'"

Carolyn went to the new "Brugo's Take-N-Bake Pizza Co. Bistro" the other day, and said it was very good. She enjoyed a slice of the Chicken with Roasted Garlic, and said they have an excellent wine and beer list, along with a variety of appetizers, salads and desserts. It's located next to Starbucks at 3228 N. Carson St. They have an agreement with Starbucks ... Brugo's won't sell coffee, if Starbucks doesn't sell pizza. Smart people.

Sherry Hester wrote us with a recommendation for the old K-Mart building. She'd like to see an indoor-outdoor miniature golf course, with some kind of eatery, put in there ... would be fun for the whole family and could be used year round. "Food" for thought, and a provocative idea.

Lots of things going on in town: St. Teresa's is putting on a FREE Christian Concert, starring nationally recognized musicians and composers Tony Alonso, Donna Pena and John Flaherty, on Friday, April 11 at 7 p.m. at the church. Tapes and CDs will be available for purchase. All are welcome. Mallard's, at Empire Ranch golf course, will have a March Madness buffet on Monday, April 7, at 5 p.m. so you can watch the NCAA championship (885-1019). It's $8 for all you can eat, and $8 for all you can drink (bring a designated driver though). Goooo, Jayhawks. Saturday, April 5, the Carson Chamber Singers will perform at the BAC Performance Hall at 7:30 p.m., under the direction of Judy Monson; and Proscenium Players Inc.'s "Romeo and Juliet" opens Friday, April 11, at 8 p.m., at the Brewery Arts Center with their opening night champagne/sparkling cider party. It's a "don't miss."

Congressman Todd Tiahrt, (R-Kansas), is appalled that the Administration awarded the $35 billion contract for the KC-X Air-refueling tankers to France, instead of this country. He feels they did not have enough information to go ahead with this plan. You can get more information by Googling his Web site, or by calling the White House at 202-456-1111. You can also express your opinion by calling your congressman or senators. He also has a "Tanker Blog" that has additional information. And we wonder why our jobs and technology are going the way of the Dodo bird?

M just had her driveway redone by Peter S. Coates, Ph.D (biology). He put himself through school doing concrete work (shades of his father, Peter L., and crew) and did a magnificent job. Now he's on his way to Idaho for a month to teach about sage grouse, then off to UC Davis for a research job. His beautiful wife, Kristen, is a teacher ... they were married last July and backpacked around half the world for six months on their honeymoon ... Italy, Turkey, Nepal ... and even started a school. What a great couple.
