Douglas, Carson go 1-2 in golf

RENO - For the second straight week, Douglas and Carson finished 1-2 at the Sierra League golf tournament at Wolf Run Golf Club Monday afternoon.

The Tigers won their second straight tournament, posting a 406 thanks to a 78 by Cody Heinz. Carson, led by Jonathan Singer's 77 and Zack Rispin's 78, finished two strokes back at 408.

Reno was third at 414, Damonte fourth at 424, South Tahoe 432, Wooster 470, North Valleys 521 and Hug 593. Damonte Ranch's C.J. Gibson was the medalist with a 4-over-par 76.

"It was definitely much better than last week," Carson coach Rod Butler said. "The top four (Singer, Rispin, Isaac Holt (82) and Ryan Livermore (82)) were much better.

"The greens were a little bumpy and tough to putt. We knew that going in it would be difficult."

Butler said that some of his players are still losing shots, especially close to the green.

"We're taking four shots to get up and down from 20 yards off the green," Butler said. "That happened a couple of times today. It's taking one or two chips to get on the green and then two putts, or it's taking a chip and three putts."

Butler is hoping to get even better play from Isaac Holt, who improved from a 92 to an 82, tying him with Ryan Livermore for third-lowest score on the Carson squad.

"Isaac isn't playing real well right now; he 's struggling," Butler said. "He shot 92 last week, so he's closer to where he should be. If you talk to Isaac and Ryan, they will tell you they should be in the 70s. I think Isaac will come around."

Singer was pleased for the most part with his 5-over-par 77, which included birdies on Nos. 13 and 16. On the 13th, he hit a lob wedge to within 4 feet of the cup, and on 16, he hit a sand wedge to within a foot.

"My lag putting was a little off," Singer said. "I made a lot of 6-foot comebackers, though. I hit the ball well off the tee."

Rispin, meanwhile, was disappointed with his effort. He birdied No. 18 with a 15-foot putt, but doubled No. 1, a par-4, and tripled No. 15 when he hit his second shot into a hazard and was forced to take a drop.

"It was horrible," Rispin said. "I was inconsistent. I drove the ball solid all day. I didn't use a 3-wood once. It was either driver or 3-iron.

"From 8-iron to the lob wedge, I was either long or short."

Rispin estimated he rimmed out six birdie putts. If four of those fall, he would have been the medalist.

The third Sierra League event is scheduled for 11 a.m. a week from today at Sierra Sage, and Butler will have two new faces in the line-up. Sam Staub and Levi Taylor, both of whom played in the state tournament last year, are expected to play in the top six next week. The duo is expected to replace Jordan Rogers and Garrett Gingell, who shot 89 and 96, respectively.

Besides Heinz, Eric Guzman and Thomas Wicker each shot 79s for Douglas.
