The nomination period has begun for the 2008 Community Awards of Northern Nevada, which recognize outstanding citizens in several categories living or working in the Nevada Appeal readership area.

The awards will be judged by the Nevada Appeal Reader Panel and presented at a banquet on June 26 at the Carson Nugget. Last year's event drew approximately 300 attendees.

This year's categories are: Public servant of the year, recognizing people who work for federal, state, local and tribal governments.; organization of the year, recognizing a group that works for the betterment of its community and residents; artist of the year, recognizing a person who has made a contribution to the arts of Northern Nevada through their own work or encouragement of others; athlete or sportsperson of the year, recognizing a person's contributions to athletics, either through personal accomplishment or encouraging others; educator/school administrator of the year, recognizing a top teacher or administrator; student of the year, recognizing students who stand out because of school and other activities; mentor of the year; volunteer of the year; employer of the year; employee of the year; humanitarian of the year, recognizing a person who has taken personal interest in the problems in their communities and have shown determination or sacrifice in solving them; and citizen of the year, a special award that recognizes a person who has made exceptional contributions to his or her community.

The public is encouraged to nominate people for any of the categories.

To do so, send a nomination letter of approximately 150 words explaining what makes your nominee special, including specific examples. Include the category you're nominating them for, and don't forget to include your name, address and phone number.

Send that information to the Nevada Appeal, Community Awards, 580 Mallory Way, Carson City, NV 89701.

You may also e-mail it to editor@nevadaappeal.com. On the e-mail subject line, write "community awards nomination."
