CHS girls take fifth in relay in swimming

Carson High's 4x400 girls relay team of Jamie Showalter, Tatum Boehnke, Beth Lewis and Julie Asire finished fifth to lead the Senators' effort at the NIAA 4A State Swimming Championships on Saturday at UNLV.

The CHS team took fifth in one minute, 34.78 seconds. For Carson's boys, Kevin Dyer was sixth in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:55.48 while Paul Chang was sixth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.71.

Also for the boys, Jacob Cornwell was eighth in the 100 backsrone in 1:00.07 and eighth in the 200 free in 1:54.33. Carson's 200 free relay team of Cornwell, Luke Gentner, Nick Schlager and Chang was seventh in 1:34.78 while Cornwell, Gentner, Schlager and Dyer were sixth in the 400 free relay in 3:28.10.

In the team standings, Palo Verde edged Reno High for the boys and girls titles. Palo Verde outscored second place Reno 168-153 in the boys and outscored second place Reno 164-153 in the girls.

Carson's boys took 14th with 26 points. The Senators were without two of their top swimmers in Matt Grunert and Garrett Clayton, who elected to attend the senior prom.
