6-year-old boy killed, 4 others hurt in I-80 crash near Elko

ELKO " A 6-year-old boy has been killed and four other people injured, one critically, in a rollover accident on U.S. Interstate 80 east of Elko.

The Nevada Highway Patrol says a 15-year-old girl from Spring Creek lost control of the Chevrolet Tahoe she was driving at about 1:15 a.m. Thursday near the Ruby Valley exit.

The SUV overturned in the median, ejecting three passengers, including the young boy who died, Devin Strom of Spring Creek.

The name of the driver has not been released but the patrol says she had a valid Nevada instruction permit issued about two weeks ago. She's been taken to an Elko hospital with moderate injuries.

Two other passengers, 11-year-old Austin Cunningham and 34-year-old Rochelle Sutherlan, also have been hospitalized in Elko with moderate injuries.

The other passenger, 18-year-old Joshua Castagno, has been airlifted to University of Utah hospital in Salt Lake City with critical injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.
