FALLON " The Churchill County School Board superintendent received a warning from the school board Monday night for improperly using the Internet " sending a gender-biased joke to some staff members.
Carolyn Ross was accused of four other gender-bias complaints, but the board said there should be no further action.
Several employees of the district contacted trustee Ron Evans about remarks and preferential treatment Ross allegedly gave to female staff members.
Becky Bruch, a civil rights attorney from Reno, read the accusations against Ross to the board.
While the board voted 4-0 to reject the first four gender-bias accusations, trustee Tom Riggins said he is concerned on the totality of them. He said when looking at the allegations individually, there are no violations.
Trustees Dave Ash, Evans and Lou Buckmaster did not attend the meeting.
Board member Paul Hinz said his concern is the public perception residents may have on these accusations.
"I do not believe it is intentional, but we are dealing with a perception problem," he said. "Maybe, we need to deal with some overall solutions for all administrators."
Riggins said the message Ross is accused of sending is similar to e-mails he receives often, but added what Ross allegedly did is a violation of a policy the board has on Internet usage.
Ross was asked if she wanted to say anything in her defense, and the board recessed the meeting to give Ross time to consult with her attorney.
"I think it is the best interests to proceed with the understanding I will be writing a letter to the board," Ross said after conferring with her lawyer.
