Joseph L. Bensinger Jr., 86, a Carson City resident since 1964 and Boy Scout Leader for 17 years, passed away Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008 at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center. He was born April 21, 1922 in Elk Hills, Calif.

He married Elizabeth Wilson Feb. 1, 1946. Joe graduated from University of Southern California in Engineering and retired from Douglas Aircraft Company in California. He belonged to Sigma Phi Delta Fraternity.

After moving to Carson City he was very active in civic and volunteer work. He served on the Carson City Planning Commission from 1970-1975; City Supervisor from 1975-1978; organized Capital City Health Fairs for 13 years; Carson Tahoe Hospital Board from 1975-1978; Search and Rescue for 20 years; "Good Guy Award" at the Senior Volunteer Program; Rotary Club; Navy League and Republican Central Committee. Joseph attended the Presbyterian Church and was an Army Veteran of World War II.

In addition to his wife, Elizabeth survivors include three sons Joseph III and wife Twila of Carson City, Jonathan of Carson City and Jeffrey of Springfield, Ore.; one daughter Marie Bensinger of Carson City and two grandchildren Jennifer Bensinger of Santa Barbara, Calif. and Jesse Bensinger of Carson City.

Viewing will be noon-4:30 p.m. Thursday at Walton's Chapel of the Valley. Private family graveside services will be held at Walton's Carson Gardens Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Boy Scouts of America.
