Deadline for governor's arts awards extended

The Nevada Arts Council has extended the deadline for nominations for the annual governor's Art's Awards until Friday.

Nominees must be residents of Nevada or organizations and businesses that work in Nevada

Six awards will be given: Excellence in the Arts, Excellence in Folk and Traditional Arts, Leadership in the Arts " one for individuals and one for organizations " Patronage in the Arts and Leadership in Arts Education.

The awards ceremony will be held in Reno in March 2009.

Cutthroat restoration plan hearing at Markleeville

California fish and game officials are holding a public meeting Tuesday to discuss restoration of Paiute cutthroat trout habitat in Silver King Creek.

The meeting will begin at 4 p.m. in Markleeville at Turtle Rock Park Community Center, 17300 State Route 89.

The Department of Fish and Game and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are preparing a report to evaluate the impact of restoring the trout into nine miles of historic habitat now occupied by non-native trout species. The proposal includes removing the non-native fish in Silver Creek.

Among the methods being considered to remove the current fish population are the chemical rotenone as well as electo-fishing and temporary removal of the water in the stream.

Elko broadcaster named to CPB board

Lori Gilbert of Elko has been named to the board of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Gilbert has more than 20 years experience in broadcast journalism, much of it in providing news in rural communities. Much of her career has been spent as news director for Elko Broadcasting's KELK and KLKO.

She was nominated for the post by Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev.

CPB was created by Congress in 1967 to develop and ensure access to public, non-commercial broadcast programming.

Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced the confirmation of Lori Gilbert to a position on the board of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

LeBlanc local agent for Child Shield

Russell J. LeBlanc, Sr. of Minden has been named as a registered agent for Child Shield, U.S.A., a national organization dedicated to the safety of America's children. The group has a goal of helping to recover lost, missing, abducted, and runaway children. According to the United States Department of Justice, these situations happen to 1.5 million children cach year.

The group has a child safety kit that provides an easy to follow educational program designed to empower parents and children with important knowledge.

Upon being notified of the disappearance of a registered chiJd, Child Shield, U.S.A. contacts the investigating police department to offer assistance by duplicating identification videotapes and posters of the missing child and distributing them to the police department's choice of any or all of the destinations included in the Child Shield, U.S.A. database.

It also posts a $50,OOO reward for recovery of the child and arrest and conviction of the person responsible.
