Olympian's visit to Carson City real treat

It was a real pleasure for Maizie to meet Stephanie Brown Trafton, the Olympic gold medalist in discus, at Fleet Feet last Saturday. She's very pretty, very tall (6'3"), very slender, and very nice. She even let M wear her gold medal for a minute (the closest M will ever get to one, you can be sure). She was in the area to speak to the Minden Boys & Girls Club about mentoring girls in sports. If you remember the Russian shot and discus throwers in years gone by, who looked like heavy male body builders, you would have been pleasantly surprised. Not only is she a role model for young women, she's an industrial engineer who has a great sense of humor. "My role model was Mary Lou Retton, but as I grew up, I realized my feet would drag on the ground if I was on the high bars ... hence the discus." Her next goal is to win a national championship. We will be rooting for her and wish her the very best

Sushi lovers rejoice: Sushi King has opened up next to the King Buffet off Topsy Lane, south of Carson (267-1688). Fairly priced, they have an array of delicious sushi (or sashimi, if requested) to satisfy even the most picky of eaters. The food was good, as was the service and staff. They are even set up for "to go" orders. It's worth a try, if you like sushi.

Two lovely ladies in the hospital this week ... so we send our best regards to Sara Garcia, who tangled with an automobile Saturday (and was particularly upset because she was on her way to dinner and hadn't eaten yet); and "Ma" Tate, who had a bout with pneumonia again. Get well soon.

The Connolly's sent us this Internet joke ... they said it was especially for Sister Marie (tee hee): "A nun gets into a cab and notices that the cabdriver keeps staring at her. She asks him what is so interesting and he replies, 'Sister, I hope you won't find this offensive, but I've always had a fantasy to kiss a nun.' 'Well,' she responds, 'there's not much I haven't heard before, but first, you must be Catholic, and second you must be single.' The cabbie is very excited and pulls over into the alley, whereupon the nun gives him a kiss that made him blush. Back on the road, the cab driver starts to cry, and tells the nun, 'I lied ... I'm married and I'm Jewish.' The nun says, 'That's OK ... my name is Kevin and I'm going to a Halloween party.'"

"Salem's Daughter," presented by the Unnamed Theater Company, will be at the BAC Performance Hall on Oct. 28, 29 and 30 at 7 p.m. The production is performed and directed by some lovely young ladies who are home schooled, and it's a chance to see their excellent talents (883-1976). Break a leg!

Carson City's senior center is asking for warm Christmas gifts for the elderly. With the economy in the dumpster, many seniors need warm clothes, coats, blankets, gift cards from grocery stores, etc. You can drop off a gift or donation, gift wrapped for Christmas, and identified as to size and gender; or call the center (901 Beverly Dr.) at 883-0703 to find out what is needed. They will be ever so grateful, and you will be spreading some needed Christmas cheer.

Happy Birthdays to Roberta Rutledge, Dixie Dickerson, Russ Law, and Keith Stoll. We hope they partied hearty. We are sorry to see that the Station Grille closed ... it was always a place to get good food and see nice people (and there go some of the best pizzas in town ... drat). Let's hope things get better and they reopen soon.

The Carson City Symphony Orchestra will open it's 25th season on Sunday at the Community Center at 4 p.m., featuring pianist Alexander Tutunov. Call 883-4154 for great music and all the details. "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," starring Rod Hearn, and directed by Paul Aberasturi, is playing at the TMCC theater at 505 Keystone Ave. in Reno (call 789-5671 for details and tickets). For those of you who are on the fence about the 1Ú8 cent raise in taxes for the V&T Railway, just remember that the gambling economy in the area has taken a dive because of the high cost of getting here and all the new Indian casinos going up just over the border. It's giving us a world of hurt, but the railroad will bring IN money, and will be quite the attraction for all of us.
