Nobody asked us, but ... Are you ready for some football?

It's Super Bowl Sunday - a day for watching the Colts and the Saints try to thrash each other in Florida. Or, put it this way, if you're a wild horse advocate or a very holy person, you can be at each other's throats today and not get penalized. If you don't like football, there's always figure skating.

Here are two quotes from the newspaper magazine American Profile. Joe Jacoby, Washington Redskins tackle, says, "To win the Super Bowl, I'd run over my own mother." Matt Millen, Oakland Raiders linebacker replied, "To win the Super Bowl, I'd run over Joe's mom, too." Fortunately, this year, Joe's mom doesn't need to worry ... neither one of them is in the Super Bowl.

For movie buffs: English actress Jean Simmons died last week. She appeared in many movies and television shows, "Great Expectations," "Spartacus," etc., but the one Maizie remembers is "Hilda Crane," which was filmed on the UNR campus. M was an "extra" (if you blink, you will miss her great performance), and got to "stand in" for Ms. Simmons for a brief moment. M stood on the tram, with a wind machine blowing leaves all over the place, so that the camera angles would be "just right." While they had the same hairdo, M was a good 6 to 8 inches taller, but that didn't bother the director. It was fun, and got even "funner." In the Nevada State Journal the next day, there was a quarter page picture of "lovely Jean Simmons standing on the tram waiting for the cameras to roll"...only it wasn't "lovely Jean Simmons." It was "lovely Maizie Harris." Ahhhh, fame is so fickle... anyway, thanks and farewell to the "lovely Jean Simmons." May she rest in peace.

A big thank you goes out to Annette Ballew, who is always sending goodies to our military overseas. She recently completed a drive to send Valentine's cards to them to let them know they are appreciated. You are appreciated, too, Annette.

Next weekend, (Valentine's weekend, remember?) Western Nevada's Musical Theater Company will be performing "Opening Night on Broadway," a musical review at the Community Center. You will get to see and enjoy some of the area's best singing and dancing talents (i.e. Lynne Heller as Mary Poppins, etc.), so call 445-4249 for details and information. 'Twill be fun. Proscenium Players, Inc., will be showing "Thieves' Carnival" in March, a rollicking comedy directed and produced by Dave and Pat Josten, respectively, at the Children's Museum. Call 887-0438 for reservations. And to round out the entertainment scene, the Brewery Arts Center will erupt into laughter when they put on "Nunsensations" later this month (883-1976).

Birthday wishes this week go out to Jasmine Fox, Ron Saunders, and Monte Lee. It was nice to see Marylou and Jim Martineau (vice-principal of Silver State Charter School)... they were thrilled that their son, Philip, was accepted at the University of Oregon. Now all they have to do is figure our how to pay for him; maybe he can replace the AFLAC duck -quack, quack (for the uninitiated, U of O are the fierce and fighting "Ducks") and get residuals. Also saw the Arraiz family. the late Eva Lompa's grandson, his wife, and her twin great grandsons. All very nice people.

For those of you who read this column every week, "Nana," who broke her hip recently, will get to come home from rehab this week, which is wonderful news. She told her granddaughter that if she had known she would be this exposed (in the hospital, modesty has taken the path of the dodo bird), she would have gotten breast implants. Now there's a lady with a great sense of humor.

Dare we ask? What's happening at the Ormsby House these days? Maybe, they can start "This was once a Hotel" tours, and make some money to finish it. Anyone want to place a bet in whose lifetime that will happen?
