Jack W. Buttner

Jack W. Buttner, 78, a forty-year resident of Carson City, passed away Thursday night, Oct. 16, 2008, in Yerington after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Vancouver, Wash. Jan. 31, 1930, Jack came to Nevada in 1948 and went to work for Nevada Bell where he became a construction foreman and was instrumental in delivering the first telephone service to many of Nevada's rural communities. He quickly fell in love with Nevada's wild frontier and wide-open spaces. Jack met and married Geraldine Bowman, his wife of 57 years, in Lovelock in 1951 while on one of those construction projects. During the Korean War he served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1954 at Edwards Air Force Base. Jack, along with Gerry and their three children, settled in Carson City in 1960. From 1962 until 1982 Jack and Gerry were foster parents in Carson and fostered more than 150 children in their home, adopting four. His daughter, Jody, preceded Jack in death in 1980.

Jack will be missed by and is survived by his wife Gerry, sons and in-laws Dick and Debra, Bon and Diane and Tony Buttner, daughters Misty and Cathy Jo Buttner and Mary Jane Osterander and her husband Chris, as well as, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
