Carson volleyball knocks off Galena

The Carson High volleyball team picked up a much needed win in the Northern 4A playoff race on Tuesday at Morse Burley Gym, beating Galena 25-22, 25-17, 17-25, 25-21.

With losses to Manogue and Damonte Ranch and still having to play Douglas in the first round of Sierra League play, the Senators now at least have the upper hand over the Grizzlies in the playoff race.

The difference of the match came at the end of the first and fourth games where the Senators were able to make the plays down the stretch for the win.

Carson appeared to be in control in game when after Cameo Lomorri's kill from the back row and Shannon Earwood's ace down the line that gave the Senators a 20-15 lead. But Bree Crook served for five straight points include back to back aces to give Galena a 21-20 lead. Casey Burke's kill made it 21-20 for the Grizzlies.

But Carson fought back as Elysse Virden's kill on a quick hit off of Earwood's set made it 21-21. Breanna Anderson then served for an ace and Danae Eckart's kill gave Carson a 23-22 lead.

Carson then caught a break when Mavil Diaz hit a serve that trickled over the net off th tape for an ace to make it 24-22. Galena then couldn't handle another serve by Diaz and Eckart took advantage by tapping the ball down for game point.

Carson finished game two with an 8-0 run again behind Anderson, who served for three aces and seven straight points during the run. Nikki Keller had a block and Blaike King had two kills, including one on game point, during the rally.

Emily Aguiar served for five straight points to give Galena a 20-11 lead as the Grizzlies took control in game three. The two teams battled back and forth in game four before Carson began to take control with the score tied 17-17.

King had a kill and an ace to give Carson a 19-17 lead and Anderson had two kills to give the Senators a 22-20 lead. Lomorri followed with her sixth ace, Earwood then had a block and Keller's kill on a quick hit off of Earwood's set on match point gave Carson the win.

Anderson had seven kills, six digs and four aces, Kailey Taylor had three kills and one block, Eckart had 10 kills, 12 digs and two aces, Lomorri had one kill and 10 digs, Diaz had 12 digs and two aces, Earwood had two kills, eight digs, two aces, two blocks and 43 assists, Keller had seven kills, three digs, two aces and one block, King had 12 kills, 12 digs and two aces, Virden had seven kills and two blocks, Brittney Sly had one kill and Kristina Diamond had one kill for Carson.

YERINGTON 3, WHITTELL 1

The Lions won the Northern 3A match 25-18, 22-25, 25-16, 25-13. Kayla Lommori had 19 kills, 12 digs, five blocks and to aces, Dama Cox had six kills, four blocks and an ace, Kiara Ross had four kills, seven digs, one block and 31 assists, Alex Roberts had four kills and two blocks, Rani Williams had 10 digs, Courtney Clifton had four digs and Lyzette Aguilar had three aces for Yerington.

CHS FROSH 2, GALENA 0

Carson beat Galena in the freshmen match 25-2, 25-21. Stats: Christl one ace; Lushina one block, one kill, four aces, four assists; Vonwinkel 4 kills, 1 dig; August 3 kills; McAllister-Daggs 2 aces, 4 kills; Mohlenkamp 10 points; Wolfe 2 aces, 9 assists; Bailey 2 digs; McGahuey 1 kill; Pimental 2 digs.
