Carson High's Chelsea Keating and Douglas High's Bethany Wurster were at their best during Tuesday's Sierra League girls golf tournament at Genoa Lakes Golf Course.
Meanwhile, with one tournament left in the regular season, Carson finds itself in a battle to make the Northern 4A Tournament.
Wurster shot a course record 6-under-par 66 to lead Douglas to another win and take low medalist honors.
Keating shot her best round ever, firing an 81 to tie for fourth place. Douglas High's Shelby Louie also tied for fourth with an 81.
"She's playing really, really well," said Carson coach Terry Gingell about Keating.
Also for Douglas, Michelle Nikkels took second with a 78. Douglas won with a 314 and was followed by Manogue at 371. Damonte Ranch, South Tahoe and Carson were all close behind Manogue.
Damonte finished third with a 375, South Tahoe was fourth with a 381 and Carson was fifth with a 385. Galena was sixth with a 412.
Carson looks to be in a four-way battle with Damonte, South Tahoe and Galena for the final two spots into the zone tournament.
Also for Carson, Katie Cowperthwaite shot a 95, Whitney Nash shot a 104, Lindsay Burroughs fired a 105, Julia Lapham shot a 107 and Elayna Shine added a 110. "All in all a good day," Gingell said. "I think they'll improve next week."
CHS BOYS TENNIS 13, INCLINE 5
Carson tuned up for a huge Sierra League showdown by beating Incline on Tuesday at the CHS courts. The Senators will host South Tahoe on Thursday with third place in league at stake.
If the Senators can earn the No. 3 seed, they would avoid having to play Reno High in the first round of the Northern 4A playoffs and could also set up a possible rematch in the semifinals with Galena. The Grizzlies beat Carson 12-6 in a match that featured many close sets.
"That will be a big one to win," said Carson coach Kevin Fallon about the South Tahoe match. "That would give us a great seed going into the zone tournament."
"We'll need that kind of enthusiasm and focus," Fallon also said about his team having the same kind of effort against the Vikings that it had against the Grizzlies.
Against Incline, Spencer Brinson swept his matches 6-4, 6-1 while Gordon Lee and Adam Whitt played well in first round 4-6 losses. Blake Sly also swept his matches 6-2, 6-1 and Lee won 6-4.
In doubles, Jordan Rogers and Tyler Simms swept 6-0, 6-3, Ricky Nyugen and Jon Kane swept 6-0, 6-1, Matt McDaniel and Thomas Hollenbeck-Pringle swept 6-1, 6-4, Dom Mariani and J.J. Aragon won 7-5, Ben Drozdoff and Brandon Ostin won 6-3 and Casey Good and Kris Canonigo played well in a 6-7 (5-7) loss.

Carson also turned up for its regular season finale at South Tahoe with a win. The Senators must beat the Vikings to have any shot at making the playoffs.
Elise Hansen and Hannah Dudley swept 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, Ali Collier and Bridgett Huish sept 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 and Alyssa Corda and Hannah Shaw swept 6-0, 6-0, 6-3 in doubles for Carson. In singles, Emily Collins won 7-6, Tiffany Moore won 6-3, 7-5 and Sara Shores won 6-4 for Carson.
GALENA GIRLS TENNIS 17, FALLON 1
For Galena, Haily Llop swept 6-1, 6-1, Mica Olson swept 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 Hannah Llop swept 6-1, 6-4, 6-0 and Natasha Monga won 6-2 in singles. In doubles, Lindy Deller and Adie Potter won 6-1, 6-0, Emily McClintock and Leann Roggensack won 6-0, 6-4, Annie Roach and Kelsey Rummler won 6-2, 6-1, Alex Darling and Ellen Ferguson won 6-0 and Kylee Joseph and Olivia Mason won 6-3.
TINYMITEBLUESWIN
The Carson Senators Tiny Mites Blue youth football team won last week in Reno at Mira Loma Park, defeating the Reno Patriots Blue 36-12.
The Senators came out firing on all cylinders. The offensive line of Kevin Tooke, Malek Kangas, Cody Neal, Connor McCleary and Dean Poppenga III paved the way. Colton Schafer and Adam Fenton combined for five touchdowns and quarterback Jacob Sorber added his first touchdown of the season with a sneak up the middle. Gabriel Morton caught another pass for a sizeable gain.
Slot receiver/quarterback Chance Sanders had his biggest run of the year with a 40-yard carry to the Patriots 8-yard line on an end around. Paul Honein also stepped up to add 40 yards on his biggest carry of the year. Braxton Carter saw some time at fullback and was solid up the middle. The offensive line missed the services of Gabriel Tatro who was absent due to a family event.
Other than two touchdown runs up the middle by the Patriots, the Senators defense only gave up only one first down and forced the Patriots to go three and out through most of the game. Garrett Tibma, McCleary, Peter Honein, Carter and middle linebacker Malek Kangas were among the leaders. Kangas saw his first action as a two-way player and was stellar throughout. Sasha Keith-Handschuh and Garrett Wilson also played well defensively.
The Tiny Mites Blue will travel back to Reno's Mira Loma Park this Friday for a 6 p.m. game against the Reno Ravens White team.
DOUGLAS RODEO SHINES
The Douglas Rodeo Club got off to a strong start to the season this past weekend at the opening state high school rodeo in Ely.
Grant Denny had an outstanding weekend, placing second Saturday in bareback riding, fifth Friday in bull riding and second Friday in steer wrestling to finish in seventh in the all-around cowboy standings.
The cutters had a strong showing as well with Byron Kreck placing eighth Friday and 10th Saturday and Kenny Collins placing second Friday and fourth Saturday in the boys cutting. Becca Glocknitzer placed fourth Friday and second Saturday in girls cutting.
Team ropers Jessica Nalder and Nick Castillo also had a strong showing as they placed fifth on Saturday.
The club would also like to thank all those who showed up for the car wash at Carson Dodge.
WNC BASEBALL POKER
Two of America's most popular pastimes, baseball and Texas hold 'em poker, are joining forces on Thursday, Oct. 16, from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Peppermill. The no-limit poker tournament will benefit the Western Nevada College baseball Team.
There will be 10 prizes offered, including a grand prize of a one-year membership at Red Hawk Golf Course valued at $4,000. The entry fee is $200, and a complementary cocktail hour and registration will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. For registration information, call the Western Nevada College Foundation at 445-3240.
BODYWISE OPENING
Bodywise Physical Therapy will hold its grand opening fro 4-6 p.m. today at 931 Mica Drive, Suite 1 in Carson City.
Bodywise's therapy and training services incldues post-surgical rehabilitation, general therapy, sports therapy, strength and conditioning, women's health and pediatric adolescent therapy. Bodywise has a fully equipped gym and rehabilitatioin center that offers fitness and relaxation services.
Bodywise works closely with local winter athletes and the U.S. Ski and Snowboarding Association. Among those scheduled to attend the grand opening are Mickey Ross, who competed in skiing at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy, Carson Valley's Craig Garbiel, who is one of hte world's top ranked World Big Mountain Freestyle ski competitors and Reno's Ross Baker, a world class snowboarder. There will also be chair massages, food and music.
YOUTH HOOPS SIGNUPS
Registration for the Cason City Recreation Division's Little Senators Basketball instructional program will be held from October 6-24.
Signups will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Carson City Community Center office. Boys and girls in first and second grades are eligible for the 12-week instructional program.
