TRUCKEE " B.E.A.R. League volunteer Jim Sajdak noticed a new trend " bears getting behind the wheel.

In recent cases, however, the invading bears are not looking for a joy ride. They're looking for french fries, gum wrappers, mints and whatever else you might have left.

During the last few weeks, Sajdak reports, multiple vehicles near Truckee have been entered by bears at night.

"The bears will use their nose, tongue or lower lip to open the car door without even a scratch. It's a fun challenge even if there is no food available," Sajdak said. "If you really believe that it will never happen to you ... still lock your doors."

Sajdak continued: "As I always tell people, 'It's not a problem when a bear gets in your car; it's a problem when the door closes behind it.'"
