Horsford, Buckley to mint medallions

Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford and Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley will mint the first commemorative coins of this legislative session in a Thursday ceremony at 12:15 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum.

The medallions will be struck on the historic press at the former Carson City mint. They will be minted in both bronze and silver.

This year's coins will feature Nevada's original state seal on one side and the current state seal on the other.

Limited edition numbered silver medallions will be pre-sold for a first-day drawing to be held Monday. Entries for that drawing must be received by Friday. The silver medallions are 1.5 inches in diameter and contain one troy ounce of pure silver.

The bronze version is not limited and will be available for purchase at the Legis-

lative Gift Shop beginning April 8.

Arts council applies for stimulus money

The Nevada Arts Council has applied for stimulus funding.

The federal stimulus package contains $50 million in direct support for the arts through the National Endowment for the Arts. It can be used to fund activities that preserve jobs in the non-profit sector. Non-profits have been hurt in the recession by declines in donations and other support.

The Arts Council is organizing a series of conference calls in the coming weeks to help grantees in applying for arts stimulus funding. The agency has a resource center on the Internet at www.nevadaculture.org/nac.

Lawmaker wants to abolish term limits

A term-limited state lawmaker in his final session urged a Senate panel Tuesday to support a constitutional amendment to erase the 12-year cap on service in the Nevada Legislature.

Sen. Maurice Washington's (R-Sparks) SJR10 would have to be approved by the 2009 and 2011 Legislatures and ratified by voters in 2012.

This will be the final legislative session for seven senators and 10 Assembly members because of term limits placed in the Nevada Constitution by voters in 1996.
