LAS VEGAS " Officials say the military commander of Nevada's 4,000 Air and Army National Guard troops won't be reappointed in June.

Air Force Maj. Gen. Cynthia Kirkland informed guard members by e-mail that she'll step down from the post she's held for four years.

Gov. Jim Gibbons' spokesman, Dan Burns, says the governor thanked Kirkland for her service but decided it was time for a change. No names have been mentioned to for her replacement.

The 55-year-old Kirkland was traveling on state military business Wednesday and couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

She's the first woman to have the job. Gov. Kenny Guinn appointed her in June 2005 to replace Air Force Maj. Gen. Giles Vanderhoof.
