PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) " Suspended NFL quarterback Michael Vick was being held in a prison in his home state of Virginia, and it was unclear Thursday whether he was still heading back to a Kansas penitentiary to await his transfer to home confinement and eventual release.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons Web site reported that the former Atlanta Falcons star had been moved to the medium-security unit of the Petersburg Federal Correctional Complex about 25 miles southeast of Richmond.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Frank J. Santoro denied a motion Tuesday to require Vick to attend an April 28 status hearing on his case in Newport News and ordered him to return to Leavenworth, Kan., where he has served most of a 23-month sentence for bankrolling a dogfighting ring.

Vick's lawyers had hoped if he was required to attend the hearing, then U.S. marshals would leave him at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail in southeastern Virginia.

A person answering the telephone at the Petersburg prison said he could not comment. Vick's attorneys did not immediately return calls for comment.

The 28-year-old Vick is scheduled to transfer to home confinement May 21 in Hampton, Va., and is set to be released from federal custody on July 20.

Santoro said last week that Vick's plan to repay his creditors was not feasible, largely because there is no assurance that Vick, once the highest-paid NFL star and among the league's most popular players, will be able to resume his NFL career. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said only that he will review Vick's status after he is released from prison.

Vick's bankruptcy plan would have allowed him to keep the first $750,000 of his annual salary. Creditors would get part of any amount over that.

Vick has lost nearly all the record-breaking $130 million from a 10-year deal he signed with Atlanta in December 2004.
