A blown transformer on South Curry Street in Carson City knocked out power to 3,200 NV Energy customers in areas of Carson, Jacks Valley Road, Glenbrook and Zephyr Cove on Sunday afternoon.
Stephanie McCaffrey, a spokeswoman for NV Energy, said technicians were able to transfer users onto another circuit by 5:45 p.m. and were working toward repairing the transformer problem.
Once that was corrected, customers were to be transferred back to the original source.
McCaffrey said the transfer was expected to cause another brief outage.
Power went out about 4:30 p.m. Sunday as reports of an explosion at the South Curry Street location came into the emergency dispatch center.
Sheriff Ken Furlong said several downtown stoplights also were not working Sunday because of the outage.
He reminded motorists that if they ever happen upon a non-working stoplight they must treat it as a four-way stop.
