RENO " Sen. Harry Reid on Wednesday toured the University of Nevada, Reno's new greenhouse complex, which he said is helping lead Nevada into the future by reducing the nation's dependence on foreign products from vegetables to oil.

"It's an exciting part of the university grounds we're on," he said.

In his tour Reid was shown experiments with plants that could eventually produce rubber for tires and biofuels to replace petroleum products as well as grow food more efficiently.

He praised the new low-tech greenhouse projects that can turn out large quantities of high quality vegetables.

Reid also praised projects at the Fallon Naval Air Station and Hawthorne Army Ammunition Depot designed to produce electric power from geothermal resources.

Both facilities are in line for stimulus funding to build 30-megawatt-generating stations powered by geothermal resources.

"We have in Nevada enough renewable energy to supply the whole country," Reid said. "We have the potential of having tens of thousands of jobs."

Reid was instrumental in getting funding for those military projects included in the stimulus package.
