Man sent to prison in Highway 50 shooting

A 24-year-old Carson City man was sentenced to up to six years in prison on Monday for his part in a January shooting on Highway 50 East in which a stray bullet lodged in the seat of a passing motorist.

Antonio Hernandez was sentenced by Judge Todd Russell to 16 to 60 months on a charge of principal to discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle.

According to police reports, Hernandez and two other men were in Hernandez's car

chasing two rival gang members who were running on foot near the intersection of Highway 50 East and Lompa Lane.

Witnesses reported seeing someone firing shots out of Hernandez's vehicle at the fleeing men.

A passing motorist called 911 after a bullet shattered her back window and became lodged in her head rest. She was unharmed.

Hernandez confessed to being the driver of the vehicle, but denied firing the weapon.

No other charges were brought against the other occupants of the car.

Russell also sentenced him to a concurrent on a charge of trafficking a controlled substance.
