Keep the ball rolling toward 2010 and 2012

The April 16 editorial was right on and perfectly captured the mood and spirit of the tax day demonstration in Carson City.

Participants were united in the overall theme of out-of-control government spending, both local and national. It must have been hard to concentrate inside the Legislature building with all the honking cars and cheering crowds outside.

The message was loud and clear. Government tax and spenders, listen up. Nevada citizens have had enough of careless government spending. We are mad as hell and not going to take it any more. Let's keep the ball rolling toward 2010 and 2012.

Trigg gets support

Before voters rubber-stamp Dean Heller for re-election, they should realize that as a Republican he has no traction in a Democratically controlled Congress. Sure he can posture and pretend to be working for the Second District, but it's all an act.

If you want a representative who will actually work for your interests, it has to be a Democrat. Why don't you consider voting for Cindy Olivas Trigg?

Breakfast a bonus for true reward of volunteering

Recently I was invited to a breakfast that was indeed the most sumptuous.

Upon entering the room, where breakfast was to be served, my appetite was whetted at the sight of sweet rolls, fresh fruit dishes, breakfast-baked dishes, sausages, French toast and waffles. There was a table laden with pitchers of juices, teas and coffee. My eyes feasted on the array of beautifully set tables; each draped with a brightly-colored tablecloth and, in the middle, were at least six cup-and-saucer sets. Each cup held a lovely spring plant and a welcoming "thank you" note. The room was quickly filled with others waiting to taste the impressive fares.

While enjoying the camaraderie and the delicious goodies, we were treated to a serenade by the voices of a youth choral group. What a great treat. Are you wondering what country club hosted this delectable breakfast? No country club. This was the library at Fremont Elementary School. Each year the teachers and staff host a breakfast for the volunteers. It is their way of saying "thank you" for being there for the teachers and students. What a lovely gesture.

The breakfast is a bonus as our true reward is knowing that a child has benefited from our spending maybe 20 minutes twice a week with him or her. This is what Fremont is all about. It's about giving of yourself so that a child may become a better student; hence, an asset to our community. The breakfast is a bonus.
