Nevada soccer falls to Cal in opener

BERKELEY, Calif . - Freshman Emma Rice scored her first career goal at Cal on Saturday, but the Nevada soccer team fell to the Bears 4-1 in the season opener for both teams.

Rice scored Nevada's lone goal in the 83rd minute as she scored on a 1-on-1 against Cal keeper Lauren Hein.

Cal opened the scoring in the sixth minute and took a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Bears added three goals in the second half to secure the 4-1 win.

The Bears outshot the Pack 15-2 in the match including an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal. In addition to Rice, Ellie Stott also recorded a shot for Nevada.

Three newcomers made their first career start for Nevada, Kesia Broome, Lauren Braman and Rice while sophomore Sarah Voss also made her first career start. Dana Moreno, Jillian Masciola and Jordan Ramsier also made their collegiate debuts for Nevada during the match.

Marie Cove started and played 70 minutes in goal for Nevada allowing three goals and making four saves while Moreno played 20 minutes, allowed one goal and did not make a save.

Nevada will host UC Santa Barbara at Mackay Stadium on Friday, August 28 at 7 p.m. and will host UC Irvine on Sunday, August 30 at 1 p.m.
